Vincent van Gogh Collage

Image
Description: For this project, we reviewed Vincent van Gogh's life and used visual thinking strategies to infer ideas about Vincent van Gogh's Starry Night . Then, we created our own silhouette image. We covered a large, dark-colored paper with bright and colorful tissue paper. Next, from black construction paper, we cut out our desired landscape.   Extension Activity: Vincent van Gogh's life could be integrated into language arts. Students could research or be presented with facts about his life. Students could write a narrative about his life and include a picture of a silhouette and collage. The visual the students create will allow the students to show their creativity in addition to sharing their knowledge about Vincent van Gogh.

Dot Day

Image
Description: In this in-class activity, we explored water-resistant art materials. We drew with crayons, sharpies, oil pastels, and water-based markers on coffee filters. Next, we covered our coffee filter with watercolor paint and watched to see what art materials would blend with the paint or keep their initial drawn-on shape. Since it was close to Valentine's Day, we could make our Dot Day coffee filters into a valentine. Extension Activity: A coffee filter watercolor Dot Day activity could be integrated into Language Arts and/or Science. The teacher could read the short story "Dot Day" by Peter H. Reynolds. Students could be given multiple art materials and asked to write their predictions down about them being water resistant and then explore and carry out the project. The teacher could teach the students the necessary vocabulary around this activity. For example, the word resistant.

Elements & Principles of Art

Image
My first image shows color as light is reflected. The three properties of color are hue, value, and intensity. The intensity in this image shows the colors being bright. We cannot see the color of the colored pencils in this image without light. My second image is balance. Balance is the distribution of visual weight. Balance can be displayed through symmetry or asymmetry. The designs in the stain glass window show vertical symmetry.  My third image is contrast. Contrast is the differences in values, colors, textures, and shapes. In this image, there is color contrast between the green and blue on the wall.  My fourth image is unity. Unity is achieved through repeated shapes and clustering. Unity makes artwork feel complete and finished. The repetition of the leaves, colors, and full circle make the wreath feel complete.  My last image is emphasis. Emphasis is the focus. Contrast is often used to emphasize the area of interest that can be shown through shape, size, o...
